Fall 2016 Update

Welcome Back to School and to the lovely Fall weather. Reimagine Play had such a busy summer that we thought to share all we have been up to and what’s next.

Kaboom Play Everywhere Challenge

In July, Reimagine Play was selected as a finalist out of over 1,000 applications in KaBOOM!’s Play Everywhere Challenge, a $1 million national competition for out-of-the-box ideas to make play easy, available, and fun for kids and families. KaBOOM! is the national non-profit dedicated to bringing balanced and active play into the daily lives of all kids. Our proposal is to design Conquer the Course, Boston’s first mobile obstacle and adventure play course that engages both kids and adults in active play in their own neighborhoods. We partnered with Boston Public Health Commission, Boston Public Schools and MassHousing to submit a detailed application for the final round. Though we were not selected as a grant recipient, we will be building some of the play structures for the BuildBPS Open House in October. While the news was disappointing, we got lots of feedback and learned quite a bit about designing fun and accessible play structures. A shout out to Boston Parks, Office of New Urban Mechanics, Design Museum and Youth Design for lending their support and guidance to us.

Dimock Road to Wellness 5K

We had an incredible day at the Second Annual Road to Wellness 5K Walk/Run held on Saturday, September 10th at The Dimock Center. From the long jump contest to the mini obstacle course, these kids gave it their all. Congratulations to all the youth athletes who participated in the Kids Fun Run. A special thanks to The Dimock Center, HoodFit, and B.A.A. for bringing this inspiring event to the Roxbury community and to Playworks for supporting kids play! Mark your calendar now for next year's event, which will be held on Saturday, September 9th 2017. Be sure to visit the Road to Wellness website throughout the year for updates.

What’s Next

Build BPS Open House

On October 29 and 30, 2016, Boston Public Schools will host its first #BuildBPS Open House at the Bruce Bolling Municipal Building in Roxbury where BPS will showcase its vision for the future of schools. Reimagine Play will be displaying newly designed active play structures, some of which are part of our KaBOOM! Play Everywhere Challenge application.  Check out our giant slackline nest, climb a classic geo-dome, play with LED stackable light cubes and decorate a life-size box art maze. Come see how BPS is building more accountable schools and learn how to slackline and build mini geodesic domes. The Open House is free, though RSVPs are requested. After BuildBPS, our pilot structures will be available for display at other locations. To reserve the exhibit, please contact us.

Boston Foundation Grant Recipient

Inspired by kids' love of obstacles, Reimagine Play will be developing an innovative physical education and life skills curriculum to go along-side new mobile, obstacle structures thanks to a $25,000 Open Door Grant by The Boston Foundation. Since its launch in the summer of 2015, Reimagine Play has provided it’s On the MOVE Kids Fitness classes to over 1,000 children across Boston. Classes incorporate fun obstacles – from ninja warrior quad steps and tires to agility ladders - to teach children fundamental movement and life skills needed for success in school, sports and everyday activities. This grant will allow Reimagine Play to refine its curriculum, expand the program to under-served areas and create more equitable access to innovative, physical activities for children and families across Boston.
